Purpose: The purpose of this project is to allow you to pursue the extracurricular study of other cultures and/or
geospatial technologies using five articles from a variety of academic or professional journals. Many of these articles
have been written by health care providers to educate others about how cultural knowledge and sensitivity can
improve patient care, while others demonstrate how cultural awareness can improve business, government services
or other professional practice. The content of these articles will supplement and enhance the cultural geography
perspectives you are learning in class. Others show how geospatial technologies such as GIS and remote sensing can
help solve medical, environmental and cultural problems around the world.
While many of the articles on your approved list have been published in the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, the rest
come from a wide variety of other professional sources. Some of them deal with very emotional and difficult topics
related to cultural/geographic aspects of health care, but you have a wide latitude for choosing which you want to
read depending on your career/personal interests. The articles listed in the reading lists are organized by topics
applicable to other professions and may be of more interest to non-nursing students. You’re free to choose any five
from the lists. Pick the ones that interest you the most.
Content of your reviews: You need to select and read FIVE articles from the reading lists and all are available for
download from the library’s search engines. Review each on a separate typed, double spaced page. Include a brief
summary of each article’s content and your assessment of its significance relative to the practice of “Culturally
Competent” patient/client interaction if you are a Nursing student, or how the topic could affect your own career
interests if you’re a non-Nursing major.
