What is a craft response? A craft response is a focused argument that makes a claim as to how the author of a story uses a specific element of craft (techniques). The argument should be supported with evidence from the story. Think of yourself as a mechanic who must look at the engine of a car and study it to diagnosis why the engine of the car runs so well. Or an interior designer who looks at a house to determine why the flooring, wall colors, furnishings, etc. create a beautiful décor. A craft response is NOT an assessment of a story, meaning the story is not being judged as good or bad.
For the craft response, do the following:
Step one: choose a work from this week’s readings.
Step two: read the work and make notes about the story related to character, setting, point of view, imagery, or any element of fiction that you believe is important to the success of the story.
Step three: brainstorm how the element of fiction works in the story. Use the questions from the PPT to help you. Refer to the document “Fiction Elements Download Fiction Elements” for a list of elements of fiction you can choose from to write your craft response.
Step four: Write a 350 to 400-word response in which you analyze how the author of the story uses the element of fiction in the story.
Step five: Format the response APA style and use APA in-text and references page citations
