You will read sections of 3 ancient Near Eastern documents. Enuma Elish should have been read last week; the Sumerian King List and The Epic of Gilgamesh are to be read now, utilizing the resources listed below. From Babylon, Enuma Elish (“when on high” might be like our “once upon a time” stories) tells about Marduk’s defeat of the goddess Tiamat and his subsequent creation of earth and sky from her body. This is recounted toward the end of Tablet IV. The Sumerian King List is simply a list of the fantastically long reigns of kings. Glance at this document but do notice the change of the length of years before and after the “flood.” The Epic of Gilgamesh is a quest narrative but contains the Babylonian flood account. Read the latter section of Tablet XI and how Gilgamesh learns about the flood.
