For your final paper, you will select one type of white collar crime, explain what causes someone to engage in this kind of crime, and propose a solution for this type of crime. Revise your second draft, include the new sections you’ve worked on since then (and revise those, too), and compile your final draft.

I very strongly encourage you to write the full paper as soon as you can and to submit it to the Online Writing Center for feedback. You will need to give them a few days to read your paper and provide you feedback. Then you’ll need at least a day or two to adequately incorporate their feedback and improve your paper. (But remember that their feedback are suggestions. You are the author of your own work. You decide what needs to be changed, after very seriously considering their feedback.)

To submit your paper: To submit your paper: Select the Help menu in the column on the very far left (the question mark in a circle). Scroll down to the Writing Assistance link. Under the Get Online Writing Help, click Click here to submit.  That link will take you to the submission form.

Your final paper will need the following sections:

  1. Introduction
  2. Background/Literature Review of this Type of White-Collar Crime:
    • Define the type of crime you seek to solve. Discuss the magnitude of the problem, why this is a problem that needs to be solved, who is affected by this problem, how it affects the larger society, and so on. You can use evidence from peer-reviewed journals in this section, but you could also use reports from government agencies or think tanks. Just do some background research on the organizational reports you cite – make sure you know where their biases are, because it will affect how they report and interpret the numbers.
  3. Case Study Illustrating this Type of White-Collar Crime:
    • Find an actual case of this kind of crime. The case could have been reported in the news or you could find it in LexisNexis. Describe the case.
  4. Existing Policies or Programs Seeking to Solve this Kind of Crime:
    • Describe existing policies or programs trying to solve this kind of crime. No policy or program is perfect and many policies have been proposed to solve the same problem, probably. If you can find no existing policies or programs, select a policy or program designed to prevent a similar kind of crime. In this section, you will discuss other ways to solve your problem (that is, other policies) and what is wrong with those ways of solving the problem. (that is, critique those solutions) This section will lead to your theory, so you should point out what is missing from these existing policies based on what your theory says the solution should be. See the theory section for more detail on that. This section will provide support for why your theory is the correct explanation to actually solve the problem, while other policies use an unhelpful theory and, therefore, won’t solve the problem. You should have lots of evidence from peer-reviewed journals in this section.
  5. Theoretical Explanations for this Type of White Collar Crime:
    • This is an important part of the paper, even though theories are not well developed in white-collar crime research. What causes this kind of crime? Pick a theory and explain how this theory sees the world. This section is meant to demonstrate you understand the theory well enough to apply it to solve a problem. So, if theory X says Y problem is caused by Z, your policy will be to end Z to solve Y problem. You should have lots of evidence to support your argument that this theory is the best explanation for your problem. For example, say you want to use strain theory. Strain theory says we engage in criminal behavior when our opportunities to be successful are blocked. So, let’s say your crime type is embezzling. You’d say embezzlers are motivated to succeed but can’t achieve the level they want without illegal means. (Therefore, when you get to your solution, you will say we need a policy that ensures corporate types can achieve the level they want through legal means – or that we need to change the cultural value of success at any price – or something like that. This theory WOULD NOT suggest that the solution is more punishment. Make sense?)
  6. Solution/Recommendation for Solving this Kind of Crime:
    • Your paper is leading up to this point. What are you recommending? Should we keep an existing policy/program, update or revise the policy/program, end a policy, or introduce a new policy entirely? Be clear and succinct here. If you’ve given us adequate background on what the problem is, what causes the problem, and why alternatives are not satisfactory, your recommendation should be obvious. Remember, your solution needs to be in line with your theory. Your theory gives you the WHY. Your recommendation is the WHAT.
  7. Conclusion
  8. References, formatted in APA style
    • Format your in-text citations and bibliography in APA style.
    • You will need a minimum of 14 sources for this paper. At least 8 of these sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles. The remaining 6 required sources must be high-quality academic sources. Your textbook can be one of these sources. You may use newspaper articles or encyclopedias, but these sources will not count towards the required 14 sources.

Paper Requirements
