1. Thank you Dr. Janz for sharing such an inspiring TED talk. It summed up the frustration I have often felt as a health care worker that we are offering “bandaid” type solutions as opposed to offering the resources that families need to truly be healthy.

At my facility, nurses screen for a family’s availability of resources such as food, shelter, and transportation upon admission. During the admission history the nurse asks a series of questions. If she documents a resource deficit in the eMAR, it creates a task for social workers to follow up. Most of the pediatric patients I admit in radiology are discharged the same day. In this case, while I perform the admission history and ask the questions, there is typically not enough time for a social worker to meet with the family even if deficits are identified.

I could see the Health Leads program working in my facility, particularly in our clinics and emergency department. In particular, these units in our facility have long wait times, and serve more a more vulnerable population that is under resourced. Our social worker team is unable to touch base with each family identified as lacking basic resources necessary to health. Utilizing non-clinical staff or volunteers would allow nurses and social workers to focus on their clinical work, thus improving work flow.

2. The role of my facility in keeping people in the community healthy is essential. Besides providing emergency services care, laboratory and diagnostic services, inpatient, and outpatient services; the facility also offers home nursing and family support services. Some health programs or services provided to the community are immunization assistance, obesity prevention, maternal child and adolescent health, oral health programs, childhood lead poisoning, African American perinatal health, public health nursing service, sexual health promotion unit, and tobacco education.

For example, the immunization assistance program provides information about immunization service, provides vaccinations for all age groups according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation. The perinatal hepatitis B outreach program where women who are pregnant and living with hepatitis B can receive assistance in protecting their families from the virus. Moreover, the obesity prevention program promotes education of the consumption of healthy foods and beverages and increase physical activities.

Nurses play an important role in these programs to keep people healthy. As nurses, we have the responsibility to educate patients and promote health. Nurses educate people about healthy lifestyles, risk reduction, developmental needs, and activities. Patients have the right to receive information about their health status, risk, and way to reduce risks. Nurses must provide health education and health counseling based on individual interest and decision. So, they can make informed decisions about their health. (Edelman, et al., 2013, p. 215)

I believe that the Health Lead Programs can work in my facility. As the speaker mentioned in the video, nurses and social workers aren’t enough. I believe that compassionate and empathetic college student will be a huge help. The Health Lead Program can bring new ideas to prevent disease, and especially help the most vulnerable people in the community. Students can collaborate with our programs that are already in place and assist low-income patients and families to have access to food, be healthy, and assist the patients to find free exercise programs in the community. Also, it will be helpful to recruit bilingual students or volunteers to prevent or decrease communication barriers. According to a report in 2019, the most common foreign language spoken in Sacramento County are Spanish (195,995 speakers), Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) (39,900 speakers) and Vietnamese (28,342 speakers.) (datausa.io, 2019).

3. According to Edelman et al (2013) for fitness goals, Healthy People 2020 sets the goal of increasing the proportion of adults who exercise moderately or vigorously on a weekly basis. Related to nutrition, Healthy People 2020 sets goals of increasing consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and decreasing calories from fat and added sugar sources.

Healthy People 2030 emphasizes access and consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. The goal adds in making nutritious foods available, noting that access to healthy food and affording it is commonly a barrier. For physical activity, Health People 2030 establishes goals of encouraging people of all ages to get both aerobic and strength training activity regularly. In comparison to Healthy People 2020, it adds the goal of strength training and includes children and adolescents.

4. Healthy People 2020’s goal is to encourage people to consume a healthy diet and maintain a healthy body weight to improve health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The goal of promoting healthful diets and healthy weight focuses on increasing household food security and eliminating hunger. (health.gov, 2022).

Nutrition Healthy People 2030:

The goal is to improve health by promoting healthy eating, decreasing calorie intake, making nutritious foods available, and increasing physical activity. (health.gov, n.d.). Because diet patterns are influenced by genetics, environment, and cultural values, the goals of Healthy People 2030 focus or consider the circumstances in which people are born, live, and work, as well as the conditions that shape their circumstances such as money, power, and resources at the local, national, and global levels. (med.libretexts.org, 2022).

According to Healthy People 2030, the focus is on helping people get the recommended amounts of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The Nutrition and Healthy Eating objectives will help people get recommended amounts of key nutrients, like calcium and potassium. They explain that public health interventions that focus on healthy foods are necessary to reduce food insecurity and hunger, and improve health. (health.gov, n.d.).

Fitness or Weight Healthy People 2030:

The goal is to reduce overweight and obesity by helping people eat healthy and get physical activity. About 2 in 5 adults and 1 in 5 children and adolescents are overweight or have obesity. The focus on cultural programs, policies, and public health interventions that will help people eat the appropriate calories, be physically active, and maintain a healthy weight. (health.gov, n.d.)

Also, Healthy People 2030 reduced the number of objectives in nutrition and weight guidelines. The new objective prioritizes public health issues and it is easier for the people to find the objectives that are relevant to them. (health.gov, n.d.).
