What is the presenting complaint/s according to Solution Focused therapy? What techniques did the therapist use focus on the positive
Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
The solution-focused approach indicates that therapists need only to understand the nature of solutions that can apply across people, not the nature of problems that bring them into treatment. People are thought to be constrained by narrow views of their problems which then generate rigid sequences of unsuccessful attempts at solutions. They assume clients really want change. Solution-focused therapists are interested only in the complaints that clients present, and in helping them reexamine the ways they describe themselves and their problems. They tend to assume that even troubled people are resilient and resourceful.
Goals of Therapy:
- Help people amplify exceptions to their problems. Goals of therapy revolve around
- Finding a resolution of clients’ presenting complaints.
- Attempts are made to create an atmosphere in therapy where people’s strengths can be reemphasized.
- Helping clients define goals in small steps, based on the assumption that small changes can initiate a positive spiral.
Role of the Therapist
- Solution-focused therapists use a standard set of questions and tasks to create an optimistic frame of mind and to start a snowball of solutions rolling.
- All clients were given the same assignment called a “formula first-session task,” in which they are asked to observe what happens in their life and relationships that they want to continue.
- The focus of the assessment is not on how or why things went wrong, but on how they can be better.
- Compliments are used to reinforce effective coping strategies and to help restore clients’ belief in their ability to deal effectively with their problems.
- Use the “miracle”/”exception”/ scaling questions to define and clarify direction.
