We’re now almost two years into a new decade: the 2020s. In the months leading up to the end of the 2010s, cinephiles all over the world began to discuss and argue over one particular question: what is the best film of the decade? I’m going to have you answer that question and another similar question, both of which I’ve listed below. For a film to qualify as an answer, the film must have been released in theatres between 2010 and 2019.

The film industry is always in a state of flux, but this particular moment is different. Ticket sales have been declining for the better part of a decade even as the total domestic box office has increased year after year (I’m sure you can figure out why). The exhibition business was already in some trouble, but the pandemic has only exacerbated their problems. No one really knows what the movie theatre business will look like in five or ten years, but now is the moment where theatres need look inward, come to terms with what isn’t working, and fix those issues quickly. One of the best ways to do that is to listen to their clientele. I have no doubt that you all go to the movies, or at least you did before the pandemic. Imagine I’m a movie theatre owner desperate to get you to come back. What would it take? What do you feel are the things that keep you from seeing movies in theatres more often? What do you think theatres can do better in terms of the experience of moviegoing? How can we not only compete with, but beat, the other options you have in terms of what you spend your time and money on?
