I believe that adulthood is marked by personal responsibility and independence. I have known adults who have lived with parents and grandparents beyond early adulthood to care for family members and/or to ensure that their family could maintain their property. These individuals earned incomes, contributed to the household financially and in other ways. For some there were also cultural reasons. Moving out before marriage was not acceptable.

The adults that I am referencing would not be described as NEET. They were pursuing further education, working to establish careers, and contributing to their households through daily chores and purchases. Markers like marriage and driving do not seem to apply anymore. I live in the city where many adults walk or use public transportation to get around; and we have seen evidence of many adults delaying the decision to get married and have children. Financial and personal responsibility allow adults to successfully move through society and make the decisions that were once made for them.
