Artwork Analysis Project
The “Artwork Analysis Project” is designed to put the Visual Elements and Principals of Design coursework to use in a real-life scenario. For this project, you will pick a work of contemporary art, from the attached document and analyze it based on what you have learned thus far.
To complete your assignment you will submit a 1,000-word review of an artwork of your choice (created during the last 30 years) using the following 4 categories:
Description: Describe the work in detail making sure to note the type of artwork, content and what the focal point of the artwork is. (25 points)
Analysis: Analyze how the artist is using both the Visual Elements and the Principals of Design in their work, identify and describe at least 4 from each category. (25 points)
Interpretation: Decide what you think the artwork is about using one of the 3 theories of art criticism as listed in Ch. 5 of your textbook. (25 points)
Evaluation: Decide whether the work of art is good or bad using the previous 3 categories and your personal opinion of the artwork. (25 points)

Compare the formal, contextual and expressive approaches used in art criticism.
Examine the relationship of art’s economic, cultural and personal value to issues of quality and social context.
Combine the factual, analytical and evaluative information to write an essay about an artwork.
Censorship as a type of evaluation, based on political, moral or religious values.
