Joe is a 65-year-old Caucasian male. Joe has been accompanied by the community mental health clinic by his 40-year-old daughter and his wife. Joe is quiet, and his daughter does most of the reporting. She states that she believes Joe has depression and drinks at least 12 cans of beer every day and has for all of her life. Joe does not believe that he has depression, nor does he see his drinking as problematic. Joe is only coming to this appointment to appease the women in his life. Joe indicated that he successfully held a job for 40 years and is now retired and just wants to enjoy life. He has been married for 45 years and has 2 adult daughters. He was recently diagnosed by his medical doctor with cirrhosis of the liver. He was also diagnosed with COPD, and he has smoked tobacco for as long as he can remember
