Essay 1: Exploratory Essay

For your first assignment, you will write an

Exploratory Essay

. This is a closed-form, thesis-seeking essay in which you explore—deeply—a topic of your choice. Rather than

arguing a particular point of view, your objective in this assignment is to “wallow in complexity,” to research and analyze, to posit thesis, antithesis, and synthesis; to challenge the common ways of looking at a problem.

You’ll begin, as much good writing does, with a question. This question should be regarding a recent or emerging technology.

The question is: Will Technology benefit or harm Humanity?

(I started the first paragraph below just add it to the essay)

{Technology seems to be changing every day. In fact, over the years technology has truly advanced higher then we expected it to. In today’s current society we have developed multiple devices that have seemed to have bettered society in some form or manner. For example, Iphone users have the virtual assistant known as “Siri.” Siri seems to pretty much help the iphone user stay connected with loved ones, create reminders, answers questions for you, sets alarms, and just about any other thing you can think of. For most people Siri is pretty helpful to humanity. We also have another virtual assistant by the name of “Alexa.” Alexa pretty much in my opinion is a little more advanced then Siri just because she helps control a lot of smart devices in the home. She also has a lot of the same similarities that Siri offers but just a little better. Now we also have devices such as smart control robot vacuum cleaners, Smart Tvs, Smart light control,etc. Pretty soon, we will most likely develop smart cars as well. While all these devices do a great job helping humanity I also feel that these devices might also hurt humanity if we become too advanced. For instance, In grocery stores there are now a lot of automated machines to take payments that don’t necessary need human cashiers anymore. That can become a problem because it can also put a lot of people out of a job. With everything becoming automated, It wont be long before humans wont be needed at all.}

You’ll do research to come up with a (provisional, or temporary) answer. Then you will

critique that answer—by reading against the grain, finding flaws in your original answer.

Then you’ll ask another question—a more complex question, based on your research and

your rejection of your previous answer. You will attempt to answer that question, debunk

that answer, and so on. The purpose is not to find answers, but to ask really good

questions—and as a result, to probe a topic more deeply than you’ve ever done before.

The Exploratory Essay documents the evolution of your thinking on the subject. This

essay will not be difficult to organize because it follows a naturally chronological

structure, but it is very important that you take very thorough notes during your research.

The journey of your research, specifically the exploration and your evolving opinion on

the subject, is what this essay is about. You will have significant problems writing this

essay if you have nothing to report. So research, reflection, and good note-taking are

crucial.
