Should sodas (and other sweetened beverages) be taxed in the United States? Is this fair? Is this an effective way to curb chronic diseases

About two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. While many nutritionists, researchers, and doctors have their own ideas about who or what is to blame for this growing epidemic, a common (and perhaps justified??) scapegoat is added sugar. On November 5, 2014, Berkeley, CA became the first city in the nation to pass a law taxing sugary drinks, including soda. The measure places a one-cent-per-ounce tax on sodas. Philadelphia and other cities recently followed with their own soda taxes. Should sodas (and other sweetened beverages) be taxed in the United States? Is this fair? Is this an effective way to curb chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes?
