Q. Ruined and Broken

At one point Catherine says she wants to “ruin” Henry, and Henry claims that that is what he wants, too. Do they get their wish? Does Catherine Barkley ruin Frederic Henry? Obviously, to answer this, you must consider what it means to be ruined in this book. Is it the same as or different from being “broken”?

RE: Ruined and Broken

It illustrates throughout the reading how intensely Henry loves Catherine in a way that he described as ruining him. From when Catherine says that after the baby is born, she’ll cut her hair when she’s thin again so she can be exciting, and Henry will fall in love for her all over again. He tells her that he loves her enough now and tells her “What do you want to do? Ruin me?” (305). This is entirely different from being broken because Henry’s commitment to Catherine is clear in his conversations where he says he wants her to ruin him and where he repeatedly says that he doesn’t have a thing in the world if she’s not with him. The strength of these conversations and thoughts show the depth of Henry’s love for Catherine, and how he felt faint from loving her so much.

By being so in love with one another and beginning a new life in Switzerland together at a home and spending much of their time together, they have their wishes. But then as Catherine approached death Henry rambled in his head “And what if she should die? She won’t die.” (320). These lines show the vague distortion in the mind of Henry upon the death of Catherine. Henry left her as if leaving a statue and walked back in the rain to his hotel. The tragedy and suffering he was engulfed in was Henry’s appearance in the rain, a strong sign of death and sorrow in the novel.
