There are over 50 million Spanish people in the United States, but what do we know about them/us?

There are over 50 million Spanish people in the United States, but what do we know about them/us? The
objective of this activity is to raise awareness about the members of our community, our family members,
friends, neighbors, teachers, entertainers, etc.
Step 1
You need to choose a geographical location. It can be the place you are from, a random city you are
interested about or the place where you currently live.1 You will write a short summary of the town with
census information, general points about the place, economy, education, etc.
Step 2
You will do a short research about Latinos or people of Hispanic descent in the area you chose. You will
research basic information that includes percentages of Latino population in general, percentages in the
school system, ages and economical situation. In addition, you will try finding any extra information
about this group.2
Step 3
Now that you know about the group, you will visit a store that serves the community in the area. Are
there any stores specifically geared to serve this population? Yes, no?
– If there are, choose one and visit it. What can you find? Are there any differences with the stores you
usually shop at? Are the products the same? What do you know about those products? Are the products
thought for the Latino community, to non- Latinos, both? Who in the Latino community will buy these
products?3
– If there are none, can you find a supermarket with a “Hispanic aisle”? What do they have there? Does
this aisle have products unknown to you? What do you know about those products? Are the products
thought for the Latino community, to non- Latinos, both? Who in the Latino community will buy these
products? 3
Step 4
You will create a pamphlet with all the information you have researched and you will present it to your
classmates. In it you will delve in your thoughts and reactions about the project; what you learned, your
expectations, what you realized, surprises, etc. Include pictures, drawings, etc., to make the pamphlet
visually stimulating.
Or
You will write a paper based on the former 4 steps. It will include the information asked for and a final
reflection where you will delve in your thoughts and reactions about the project; what you learned, your
expectations, what you realized, surprises, etc.
