Read the book of Philippians as if it is written to you. Imagine that when Paul wrote, “I thank my God every time I remember you,” (Phil 1:3)

This is a two part assignment:

Part 1: Read the book of Philippians as if it is written to you. Imagine that when Paul wrote, “I thank my God every time I remember you,” (Phil 1:3) he was thinking of you.

For your writing assignment, find the “Blueprint” of Philippians at the bottom of the opening page of Philippians in your LASB. These are the LASB headings of each chapter of Philippians. As you read each chapter, find Bible verses that exemplify the heading of that chapter.

For each scripture you decide aligns with the heading, (you will likely have 3-6 in each of the four headings) and write a brief summary of how this verse exemplifies the Chapter heading. Be sure to look specifically for verses that are about the heading; ie “Joy in Suffering”, not every verse about joy.

For example:

  • Joy in Suffering Chapter 1

Phil 1:7 Paul proclaims whether he is in prison or defending the gospel he has great affection for his Philippian believers, and he prays for them regardless of what he is going through.

  • Joy in Serving Chapter 2

Phil 2:6-8 Jesus humbled himself by taking the nature of a servant, he took death on the cross for our own well-being. He served us by sacrificing himself for our sins.

Part 2: Write Paul a 3-4 paragraph response letter, including things you learned about joy, how your understanding of joy has been affected and how you feel about his emphasis on joy despite the pain in his life. How does that speak into your life?
