Read Ralph Ellison’s “Battle Royal” and examine the different elements of the story: conflict,
climax and conflict resolution. Address what the conflict is in the story and whether or not it is
multi-layered/complicated or a simple conflict. Also look at the resolution and whether or not
there is a resolution, and if not, is there a possible way to resolve the conflict. Look at the climax
of the story and observe its relationship to the conflict. As you are writing, take into
consideration if Ellison’s “battle” is real or not.
