Define Training and Professional Development

Training and development are unique elements within human resources and professional advancement. It’s important to include development when one designs training, as training, in and of itself, may not be nearly as effective as when coupled with development, not only a professional development, but a development of knowledge transfer. Experiencing training may be useful in the short term, but it’s most effective when there is training transfer, when participants are able to not only understand, but also recognize opportunities and apply what was learned.

Tasks

Using resources from the professional literature, research the definition of training and development. Professional literature may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).

Explore when and why training may be important and what qualities of training and development make it effective.

Based on your research, respond to the following:

How do you define training? How do you define professional development?

What are the most common characteristics of an effective training and development program? How do these characteristics align with the analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation (ADDIE) or analysis, research, design, development, implementation, evaluation (ARDDIE) model of training and development?
