Personal Statement – Application for Master’s of Public Policy and Global Affairs
I am applying for a Master’s of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology but I’m also doing a second Arts major in Political Science. I had always been fascinated by the way science could help us understand and solve complex problems. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in microbiology and immunology, thinking that this would be the perfect way to combine my love of science with the opportunity to make a difference in the world. However, as I progressed through my undergraduate studies, I found that my interests lay in understanding and shaping the political systems that govern our world. My grades in Microbiology and Immunology courses haven’t been great and have affected my GPA. Perhaps you could address this in the personal statement. Because I only realized later that I wished to pursue political science, I didn’t have the opportunity to do any research or internship in the field. I am drawn to UBC’s MPPGA program for its emphasis on hands-on professional experiences and co-op opportunities. As someone who did not have the opportunity to do research or internships in political science as an undergraduate, I am eager to gain practical experience in the field. I believe that the MPPGA program will provide me with the opportunity to further expand and diversify my knowledge and skills in international policy and affairs. I am excited to take the next step in my academic and professional journey, and I believe that the MPPGA program is a perfect fit for me.
