This paper is worth 100 points. It will consist of an in-depth consideration and extension of Elijah Anderson’s Code of the Street. This paper should be a minimum of 4 pages, not to exceed 5 [not including title or reference page]. PART ONE: THEORETICAL SYNOPSIS (20 points) In this portion of the paper you should describe Anderson’s theory and situate within the appropriate theoretical paradigm. This is your opportunity to synthesize the theory as Anderson presents and specify its mechanisms and linking constructs. Be sure to include the following:•Discussion of the underlying assumptions of the theory. Name, define, and provide examples of the constructs or principles associated with this theory. Again, be as detailed as possible. Make use of the correct terminology. •Describe how these theoretical constructs describe the cause of criminal behavior (i.e., what is the process through which the constructs lead to crime?).PART TWO: CRITIQUING THE THEORY (20 points) •Discuss whether or not Anderson’s theory offers a good explanation of the criminal/delinquent behaviors in inner city communities. In this portion you should answer the following questions:oWhat theoretical constructs adequately address mechanisms linked with the causes of crime/delinquency? oAre there theoretical constructs/mechanisms not adequately explained by Anderson’s theory? Why?PART THREE: EXTENDING THE THEORY (40 points) •In response to your synopsis and critique of Anderson’s theory, extend it in ways that you believe will address the gaps and/or missing elements. In this portion you should pay attention to the following:oIdentify one theory, or constructs from a theory that you think would better specify the code of the streets? oExamine how the code of the street applies to other contexts (place, space, gender, race/ethnicity, culture, etc.)? Pick a specific neighborhood in San Diego and examine whether the theory applies. Be as specific as possible in your explanation. Consider the neighborhood composition (e.g., predominately Latinx versus Anderson’s focus on a predominately black neighborhood) and explanations for crime/delinquency. Do they apply in the same manner that Anderson suggests? Why or why not? If not, which theory better explains crime in the chosen area?ORGANIZATION AND FORMATTING (10 points): I will be assessing how well you organize your paper and adhere to the formatting requirements. The parts above make up the body of the paper, but you should include an introduction (tell me what you are going to do)and a conclusion (tell me what you did) (4 points). In terms of formatting (6 points), your paper should have a title page (including name and class), one-inch margins, double-spaced, times new roman, 12-point font, and please add page numbers. It should be approximately 4 pages in length. SPELLING, GRAMMAR, AND READABILITY (10 points):Note that this is a FORMAL paper. I will be evaluating your communication of the material. Pay attention to spelling, correct use of verb tense, correct choice of words, contractions, and punctuation. I HIGHLY recommend proofreading your paper to avoid awkward and confusing sentences. There are few things more valuable to any career than strong writing skills.
