Case STUDY

AGENTS

You are the Athletic Director at Big State University. The large local newspaper, The Elkhart Truth, has reported that your standout player, Billy Dover, a native of Elkhart, has been receiving cash and gifts from at least one agent during the past season, and maybe even during his sophomore year. He has been seen driving around campus in a brand-new Navigator and wearing expensive-looking gold jewelry, and you know for a fact that neither he nor his family could ever have purchased these items. Your high-profile coach,John Becher, has visions of making his mark so he can coach in the NBA someday soon, and he guided the Dover-led team to the Final Four, where they lost in the semifinal game.

This afternoon, a press conference is scheduled where you will have to face members of the press and comment on the allegations.

1.If in fact Dover received these items (in obvious violation of NCAA rules), who shares responsibility here? Dover? The agent? Coach Becher? The NCAA? Who needs to be held accountable?

2.If you were a college Athletic Director at a Division I school with athletes who potentially could go pro, what sort of agent-screening system could you put in place? Who would be involved? What would be the process to help protect and educate athletes about the dangers of dealing with agents?

3.Put yourself in the shoes of the President of Big State University. Using one of the ethical decision-making models described in Chapter 4, list the steps you would take to assess the employment status and situation of Coach Becher.
