#5The Development of Photography(Student Post)
Our book talks about how photography was developed around 1816. Niépce was the first person to make use of a camera and film. According to our book Niépce would photograph natural objects and produced color prints, unfortunately, they would not last for a long time. Countryman Louis Daguerre joined him to perfect this process. Unfortunately, Niépce died before he can see the introduction of the daguerreotype, which was a process of recording images on polished metal plates, usually copper, covered by a thin layer of silver iodide emulsion. When light reflected from an object passed through a lens and struck the emulsion, the emulsion would etch the image of the plate. The plate was then washed when cleaning solvent, leaving a positive or replica image. It’s amazing how it had to be done back in the day in order to get an image or picture on a piece of paper. I remember when most photographers had their darkroom in their homes only to be used to develop their film into pictures.

Our book states how in 1912 Congress passed the Radio Act where it required that wireless operators be licensed by the Secretary of Commerce and Labor. This all came about because of the day that the Titanic struck the iceberg in the North Atlantic arguing that if other ships had not left their radios unattended not many lives would have been lost and help would have arrived sooner. It’s amazing how such a tragedy like the Titanic enforced a law where the radio became indispensable.
