Locate and interview an I/O Psychology professional and discuss his/her experiences in the field as well as any interesting industrial
Please make up your own experience and be very precise and detail oriented.
I would prefer you “interview” someone who work as a consultant with employees in different business organizations. Write no more than 3 pages of your reflection, double-spaced, 12-point font. Alternatively, you may video record your reflections being sure to cover all the bullets points and submit your video in lieu of the written assignment.
A rubric is not included in the assignment.
Locate and interview an I/O Psychology professional and discuss his/her experiences in the field as well as any interesting industrial/organizational specific work situations that they have faced. Use the information you learned from this week to write some questions you might ask the professional about his/her experiences so you can structure your interview in a way that allows you to identify common problems, topics, or points across interviewees. Summarize your discussion with the professional by identifying:
The professional and where he/she works.
What type of consultant the professional describes him or herself to be (Org Development Consultant, I/O psychologist, Training and Development Specialist, Learning and Development Consultant, Management Consultant, etc.)
Some of the workplace-specific experiences the professional has encountered.
Which, if any, of the situations that they described piqued your interest or resonated with you. (If none of the situations they described were of interest, describe why the situation was not of professional interest to you and what might have made it more so.)
Any ideas presented by the professional that could develop into your practicum proposal and the potential type of case study that might be.
Consider these job titles when you are looking for I/O professionals in addition to the specific Industrial/Organizational Psychologist: Organization Effectiveness Consultant; Organization Development Consultant; Learning and Development Specialist; Training and Development Specialist; Learning and Performance Consultant; Director of Organizational Culture, etc. These professional titles are largely constructed by the organization to fit their strategic goals and plans. Each job description and responsibilities will be slightly different but entail primarily the same function of supporting, developing, and strategizing human resource capital.
Not all jobs will be located in HR depending on your topic of interest. You may also search for independent/external consultants who work for themselves or for dedicated I/O Psych or Organization Development firms. You may find willing consultants on the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology www.siop.org website or the Organization Development Network www.odnetwork.org. Also, consider the professional organization Society for Human Resource Management www.shrm.org.
Ultimately, you will be creating a practicum proposal with deliverables and are required to have a professional or organization with which you can work. If you did not find anything of interest in this interview, you may want to schedule a second interview in order to prepare for the rest of the course.
