Read the two prompts below, then choose one and use it as the basis for an essay (three to five substantial paragraphs) that you will write in the box under this question. I suggest that you first answer the prompt question briefly: that should serve as your essay’s thesis. Please give your essay a title, tell me if you are responding to Question #1 or #2.
1. In “The Eolian Harp,” Samuel Taylor Coleridge writes,
And what if all of animated nature
Be but organic harps diversely framed,
That tremble into thought, as o’er them sweeps
Plastic and vast, one intellectual breeze,
At once the Soul of each, and God of All? (45-49)
What do you think Coleridge means in this passage, and how does it relate to other things Coleridge has written? After you have explained this, identify another literary work you have read in this course (not by Coleridge) that is on a similar theme and explain how the author of this work agrees with, complicates, or challenges what Coleridge has to say. (Make specific references to both works and try to quote them if you have time.) Conclude by showing what the works you are discussing have to say about what was important to Romantic literature.
2. Identify what you believe is an important theme in William Blake’s poem “The Little Black Boy.” Explain first of all why you believe this theme is important, then analyze a passage from “Little Black Boy” in which Blake discusses the theme, and finally discuss how the theme fits into other things written by Blake. After you have explained these things, identify anotherliterary work you have read in this course (not by Blake) that is on a similar theme and explain how the author of this work agrees with, complicates, or challenges what Blake has to say. (Make specific references to both works and try to quote them if you have time.) Conclude by showing what the works you are discussing have to say about what was important to Romantic literature.
