Directions: A vital component of the second essay (evaluative essay) is producing criteria for evaluation of a subject. We will practice developing criteria in this exercise and applying it to a subject you’re probably familiar with: your experience with teachers!
What, in your opinion, makes for an effective teacher?
1. List what you think are the three most important pieces of criteria for judging a teacher/professor. Write these three pieces of criteria as a sentence or sentence(s) that explains why you think this piece of criteria is so important.
Example: An effective teacher should be knowledgeable about their subject matter because… etc.
2. After you have your three pieces of criteria, think of a teacher that you had in the past. How did they meet (or fail to meet) the criteria you’ve set? Write a short (250+ words) mini-essay about this teacher/professor (NO NAMES!) explaining why they met or failed to meet your criteria. Try to show extent by using specific evidence from your experiences.
