The discussion question: Think about how certain aspects of identity (age, race, gender, sexuality, class, etc) are defined, understood, and ranked in American society. Taking as many examples as you can from the chapter and films, what are some ways we might improve upon the system we have now, in terms of those categories? What are some of the values, beliefs, or practices you learned about in this unit (e.g. Native American tribes, hunter-gatherers, the Nuer, the Musuo) that might be useful in creating a better (or, “ideal”) society? (This is my writing about reading, my discussion post) so, I need to fix it and talk more about the reading. my teacher is the author of the book and that is why it is necessary that only the page and the book be cited. In this discussion, the focus was a reflection on the aspects of identity and how they are defined and ranked in the American society. The goal of the discussion is to identify how the present system may be improved. One of the key concepts expressed in this unit is intersectionality. This term describes the interconnection between the different social categorizations, including race, gender, class, religion, age, and sexuality, creating an overlapping and interdependent system characterized by inequality, discrimination, and disadvantage (Crenshaw, 2018). These associated adverse effects of the intersectionality between the different groups traverse all spheres of life, such as social, political, healthcare, and economic dimensions. While the variation between people is lasting, there is a way of mitigating the overlap in characteristics between the different groups to inhibit the sense of discrimination and disadvantage from affecting the lives of people. On a social level, there is a need for a cultural shift towards a unified society. This may be achieved through the collective recognition of the values that make a homogenous society. According to Kristi Arford (2019), the values do not exist in a vacuum, nor are they static; rather, they are interwoven in the fabric of the different cultures. In any case, all the cultures have a common ground ort particular values that are shared across all of the; case in point, every culture respect the place of honesty and integrity. One of the fundamental values I learned from this unit is self-preservation. This value is a survival instinct, requiring us to heed our surroundings as human beings. The message on this topic is the need to minimize our ecological footprint as human beings (Arford, 2019). (This is my teacher comment about my post) This is a start, but needs some further discussion of the reading.
