How did at least three of the works we read represent and/or respond to a historical event

The final stay home exam will be given in two parts. For the first part you are asked to choose two of the following three questions and respond in 3-4 pages for each question, typed, double spaced, MLA format, Times New Roman 12 point font. You are not required to do any outside research but of course you can use notes, your texts, course materials, etc. You may use any of the texts we’ve read this semester that fit the question. You must cite everything correctly and have a works cited page. This will be due in the ecampus dropbox just after midnight on May 1st, which is the day after our originally scheduled final exam time. For each question be sure to consider why not just how the theme is used. It isn’t enough to explain how we see a given theme is shown, you also want to analyze why it is used. Try to avoid plot summary and provide textual analysis instead.

1. History. How did at least three of the works we read represent and/or respond to a historical event? Was this representation biased in any way? Did the work utilize this representation to make a larger point about a specific issue?

2. Dehumanization. (No surprise with this one.) How and why do at least three of the works we’ve read depict dehumanization of certain characters and groups. What role do these depictions and the theme itself play in each text? Do you think the author depicts the dehumanization to condemn it or it the author complicit with the dehumanization (meaning they “support” in a sense that dehumanization?

3. Violence. Pretty much every work contains some element of violence, even Lady Gregory. Choose three such works to discuss this theme. How and why is the depiction utilized? Does the work celebrate and justify the violence, condemn it or present it matter of factly or do something completely different?
