Health literacy is important in the context of nutrition
Health literacy is important in the context of nutrition and health because most people don’t know how to read the nutrition label of what they consume. Health illiteracy can increase the risk of nutrition-related diseases because people usually only look at the calories or the fat content on the back of a product because it is the only thing they know that is bad and they don’t know how to read and comprehend everything else. If someone is on a recommended diet by their doctor or trying to limit something in the food they consume, it is important to be health literate because that individual can know how many calories they need to remove from their diet. In order to improve health literacy, it would be helpful to educate children in school on how to read nutrition labels so that they can take that knowledge into adult hood. Doctors should be educated on health literacy in medical school, so that they can educate their patients when making certain diet recommendation. Community health centers should have health literacy workshops in order to educate those that come to their workshops and grow in their knowledge about what they consume.
