Write a response defining patriarchy and detailing an example of patriarchy from each of the three groups that converged in North America: Native Americans, West Africans, and Europeans. In addition identify one example of behavior that contradicted patriarchy yet was socially acceptable in each society.
Write a response describing the consequences for women who did not live up to seventeenth-century society’s gender expectations. Select three groups of women from the text and explain what constituted a violation of social norms and how women were punished for their behavior.
Write a response describing women’s economic contributions to seventeenth-century colonial life and the ways in which women were able to effect some measure of influence over financial affairs.
Explain the relationship between gender and consumerism and to examine the extent to which women’s economic activities affected the course of the American Revolution. Consider boycotts, protests, and home production.
Consider why the beginning of voluntary organizations and female benevolent associations was so vital for the women’s movement. How did these club affiliations change women’s lives? What did they learn from participating in these groups and the work they did?
