While evaluations can also be analytical or informative, the evaluation you’ll write for this assignment will be persuasive—you’ll be trying to convince your audience to accept your evaluation.

We make evaluations every day: when we try to decide where to exercise, what car to buy, where to go to college, what to eat. But often, we decide what we like first, and then—based on our unquestioned assumptions of quality—we make the positive evaluation.

For example, you might say “Lorena’s Café is a great restaurant because they have huge portions and cheap prices.” “How’s the atmosphere?” your mother might ask.

“It’s bright and noisy and has dirty tile floors. But you really get a lot of food. ”An impatient friend might ask: “How’s the service?” “Not so good,” you say. “The wait staff does poorly on tips, so they’re obnoxious and slow. But the food’s cheap.” “How does the food taste?” A foodie friend might wonder. “Eh, it’s so-so, but you sure get a lot of it.” Then, why, everyone will ask, are you telling me this place is great? “Because,” you say, “I’m a poor college student and I eat like a horse. ”The above example, simplistic as it is, shows how we normally evaluate: we decide we like something and then tell everyone that it’s great—without questioning the assumptions of quality upon which we base our opinion. For this essay, we’ll do it the opposite way: first, we’ll fit the topic into a specific category; then we’ll select criteria that fit with the category; then we’ll evaluate the topic against the criteria. To return to our example: If we’d defined Lorena’s as a great restaurant for when you need a pile of food for under ten dollars, we’d have a much more convincing evaluation.
