The tools used for business communication have been undergoing profound changes over the past 10+ years. You need to know how to use the traditional tools — and to be aware of these new ones — to be effective in whatever organization you aspire to work for. This team assignment will introduce some of the ones you are less familiar with and also encourage you to explore how organizations use them.

The readings introduce many forms of electronic messaging and digital media, most newer with business uses still evolving (IM, SMS, podcasts\webcasts, blogs, YouTube, RSS, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Discus, SnapChat, Groupon, LivingSocial, and many other” Web 2.0″ tools).

For this assignment, you will be doing a team exercise that involves following organizations and seeing how they use some of these tools for communication. Each team will do a “social media audit” of a variety of entities. Your audit should include which social networks are currently being used, how they are utilizing it, and how often. The audit needs to include all the main types of platforms, so some will not be used by all of them. Each team should do a retail chain, restaurant chain, professional sports group, non-profit group, and entertainer or program (any of these can be local, national, or international).

Teams will prepare a final report [details below] explaining different ways organizations are using these tools. To start, get together with your team and decide what organizations and tools you follow–There will be a discussion board for you to present this.

The report you submit in April will be informal and memo format. There will be a lot of information to provide:

Industry type

Organization

Platform used

What type of content [article, photo, video, links, etc]

Frequency of posts

Purpose/objective [awareness, sales, complaint, announcement, etc]

Performance measures [shares, likes, etc]

Some sort of spreadsheet is best for presenting the information. If you use Google spreadsheet be sure to set the permissions so it is a shareable link and anyone with the link can at least view it. If you use the a spreadsheet then the body of the report will be shorter. You will summarize the findings overall and tell which team members produced what results. It will also need to have a short analysis where you comment on the overall findings, noting similarities or differences in the organizations or platforms used. This report type would be less than 2-3 pages.

If you decide not to include a spreadsheet with the findings the report would present the same information with perhaps a table for part of it. This could be organized by platform or by organization. To present the details the body of this would likely need to 4-5 pages, depending on the tables and complexity of the observations. As with the format above, tell who did what work and discuss the findings.
