First, post your explanation of the Atman theory found in the Upanishads. Explain it in terms of the passage in the Katha Upanishad section
Instructions:
- First, post your explanation of the Atman theory found in the Upanishads. Explain it in terms of the passage in the Katha Upanishad section that employs the analogy of the chariot and the driver (and horses, etc.). In other words, interpret the analogy as an explanation of the self/Atman (explain how the analogy captures this theory). 2. Second, in the same post, post one open-ended question that came up for you after having read both pieces (Katha Upanishad & the commentary by Murty & “Questions of Milinda”) and offer some possible answers or responses to your own question. What is an open-ended vs. closed-ended question? (Answer: Closed-ended questions are those which can be answered by a simple “yes” or “no,” while open-ended questions are those which require more thought and more than a simple one-word answer). Make sure your question is open-ended. 3. Third, offer at least one argument you can come up with to defend the idea of some kind of relatively permanent metaphysical self that maintains your identity over time. You can take your inspiration from the readings or from my lectures…but THINK FOR YOURSELF, for example, by asking yourself what reasons one might have for believing in some kind of stable self that unifies the stream of their experiences.
