Step Two (Qualitative):
Qualitative Data Collection Question
What is the image you have of a child acquiring his/her first language?
Method: Ask two participants to describe to you their prototypical image of a child learning his/her first language. If they do not easily think of an image, suggest that they think of this as a snapshot or a short video, for example, and give them time to think. Encourage them to describe what they visualize: the age of the child, the setting, other people that may be present, and interactions with those other people, both verbal and non-verbal.
As with the quantitative question, you should collect information on the age of your participants, their gender and the type of interaction the participants have, or have had, with young children (for example, as parents, non-parents, siblings, babysitter, teacher, etc.).
Write up your participants’ descriptions in brief paragraphs.
Analyze the data collected using the information you gathered on the participants. Are there patterns? What was interesting in their descriptions? Were there any surprises?
You should make connections between what you have learned, and your own reading and understanding of first language acquisition.
