Discuss the film’s visual style and its use of sound.
Discussion Board 3. “Run Lola Run” 1 page-single spaced
1) Run Lola Run is a textbook example of a postmodernist film. Based on the PowerPoint for this module and one of the provided readings, explain what makes this film a postmodernist narrative.
(2) Discuss the film’s visual style and its use of sound. As was mentioned in your earlier readings for Amelie, various diegetic sounds (often distorted) and abundant use of CGI (computer-generated imagery) are central to the narrative of this French film. How do Tom Tykwer’s choices of cinematography and soundtrack contribute to the creation of Lola‘s high-paced narrative? In particular, consider the following points: (1) Lola’s red hair and color red in general; (2) the use of video combined with 35 mm film; (3) the rapid-fire photoshoots in the fast-forward episodes; (4) Lola’s screams; (5) use of animated sequences.
(3) Many viewers note that Run Lola Run creates a tremendous sense of stress and tension for the audience. Elaborate on the various techniques that the director uses to create this tension. (e.g. how does screen time relate to “real time,” why are there three scenarios, etc.)
(4) Discuss the genre hybridity in Run Lola Run. What genres and cinematic conventions did you recognize in the film? (consider the happy ending in the third episode, love story, melodramatic dialogues between Lola’s father and his mistress, the conversation between Lola and her boyfriend between the mini-stories, the use of animation, etc.). How does this melange of genres and styles contribute to the film’s overall narrative? Compare Lola to Amelie, another film that relies heavily on merging of various genres.
(5) Detailed scene analysis. Disucss the film’s opening, including the quotations, the appearance of the titles, the “tribal” clock, and the animation sequence. How are these opening frames important for the rest of the film?
(6) Pick any of the “Film Activities” (Tasks A – L) from the “Run Lola Run” study guide and write a response to the assignment.
