Summary: The economic devastation brought on by the coronavirus pandemic is forcing
many companies to lay off employees, often in large numbers. Given that most
employees are currently working remotely, companies are having to conduct mass
layoffs via conference calls, Zoom video chats or email. Downsizing is best done in
person and remote downsizings can be viewed as overly harsh, but companies
currently have few other options. If they want to limit the time between when workers
start hearing through the grapevine about layoffs and when they get the news that they
have been downsized, employers will have no choice but to do remote layoffs. When
doing a remote layoff, companies should give the worker advance notice that bad news
is coming and turn off the video and microphone of workers who are dialing in to receive
bad news. The managers who are delivering the bad news should appear on camera to
portray genuine emotion.
