Unit 2 Discussion Board Drug Offenders: Jail, Treatment, or Both
The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.
At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.
The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.
Scenario:
You are running for an elected position as a state representative for your district. Part of your potential constituent’s concerns includes the newly formed juvenile pretrial program for diversion of first time nonviolent drug offenders. The community wants to know where the representative candidates stand on the issue of juvenile drug offender pretrial diversion and why. They do not understand why they should have to pay for treatment of young offenders who they see as hopeless cases that will never have anything to offer society. Your turn has arrived to speak on this topic.
Please include answers in your main posting for the following questions. You must provide meaningful feedback to the main postings of at least two of your classmates:
Why should the community support the pretrial diversion of juvenile drug offenders?
Should they be given any more consideration than adult drug offenders? Explain your answer.
Should drug offenders who have committed other crimes while intoxicated or looking for drug money be treated differently?
What should the criminal justice system do with these offenders, and why should it be done?
Solution preview
The community should support the pretrial diversion of the drug offenders. This is because for the juveniles who have never committed any drug-related offense they should deserve a second chance in life. Additionally, the rehabilitation and the treatment of such offender would deter the first time offenders…………………….
