Captivity Narratives are stories about people who are taken prisoner by “barbaric” peoples. They do NOT have to be Native Americans, although the selections you read are about the indigenous people of North America. They were exceedingly popular during the early days of the United States.
Mary Rowlandson was a Puritan settler in Massachusetts, when in February 1675, during King Philip’s War, she was taken prisoner by the Wampanoag natives. She was ransomed in May of the same year and reunited with her family. Mary wrote about her time with the natives in her captivity narrative.
Mary Jemison was a fifteen-year-old Irish immigrant when she was taken captive by Seneca natives in a raid in Pennsylvania in 1758. She lived most of her life among the Seneca, returning to the “white world” only as an old woman. Jemison’s account is important because it details one of the few dual-cultured people living in Colonial America.

What similarities and differences were there between “white” culture and Native American culture? What is the cultural and historical significance of both narratives? Discuss in terms of both the British-American and Native-American standpoint. Explain your viewpoints fully.
