This project allows you to look closely at some aspect of the culture your live in that interests you and analyze what makes it meaningful in your life. You might consider a tangible artifact, such as toys or games you played with growing up, a possession such as your car or cell phone. Fashion trends can make for an interesting topic, as can physical fitness trends. You might be interested in exploring a cultural practice such as following of a musical group, skateboarding, reading a particular genre of literature, or participating in a sport or following it as a fan, or using social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, or Facebook.
Food and our associations with it can make for a rich investigation of a particular culture. One student explored the various types of “barbecue” in America and a Chinese student wrote about noodles, and in particular a noodled specific to her hometown of Xian. Another student explored the world of Girl Scout Cookies, from sales to customers’ enjoyment of this American tradition. Your job is to think of something within your life that you are curious about, and then dive in and explore it.
Do not submit papers on the legalization of marijuana. The ones I’ve received in recent years all used the same sources, and appeared to be a version of a paper one might find circulating through a dwelling where many students live together.
Remember, as you select the topic that you will write about your goal is to use critical analysis and critical writing to generate new knowledge. Go beyond describing what the artifact, idea or practice means to you and explore what they mean to the culture at large.
