Essay questions (write one paragraph per question)
1. The Communist Manifesto and Paul Ortiz’s book offer two different historical perspectives. Compare and contrast them.
2. What impact did the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) have on the US?
3. Cecil Rhodes, the owner of the British South Africa Company, was so powerful that he created an African country that bore his name: Rhodesia! Today it is called Zimbabwe. In 1895, he said: “I was in the East End of London (a working-class quarter) yesterday and attended a meeting of the unemployed. I listened to the wild speeches, which were just a cry for ‘bread! bread!’ and on my way home I pondered over the scene and I became more than ever convinced of the importance of imperialism…. My cherished idea is a solution for the social problem, i.e., in order to save the 40,000,000 inhabitants of the United Kingdom from a bloody civil war, we colonial statesmen must acquire new lands to settle the surplus population, to provide new markets for the goods produced in the factories and mines. The Empire, as I have always said, is a bread and butter question. If you want to avoid civil war, you must become imperialists.”
Is this outlook in any way reminiscent of the behavior of the US corporations or the US government as described by Paul Ortiz in An African American and Latinx History of the United States? Explain and give examples.
Essay (write a five-paragraph essay with a thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph)
Free State of Jones (2016), starring Matthew McConaughey, is based on the research of Victoria Bynum, a history professor. It tells the story of a revolt against the Confederacy that happened in Mississippi during the Civil War, near the town of Natchez, which was one of the wealthiest areas on this continent at that time, due to its massive slave plantations, which produced cotton for the US, Britain, France and many other countries. Nearby was Jones County, which was extremely poor. This movie is available for free on YouTube. It is 2 hours and 20 minutes long, which I know is far longer than anything most people ever watch nowadays, but it is the best movie on the Civil War that I have ever seen. Get some popcorn and watch it, preferably on a large screen rather than your phone. It is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJHsSkPBSdk If you watch it on Netflix or some other paid subscriber service, you will probably get higher-definition video, but the YouTube version appears to be good enough. For your essay, discuss how this movie’s depiction of the Reconstruction era compares with what is described in Chapter 4 of Paul Ortiz’s book.
