Final Project Guidelines for Social Network Project
Your project should involve at least one social network and some discussion of communication elements. Remember, the Social Network Sites like Facebook are not necessarily networks—rather, people use them as tools to facilitate social networking. Your project needs to address social network structure.
The paper should include:
Introduction and Background Literature Review
Include theoretical, empirical, popular and in-class resources to build your argument and demonstrate knowledge of the field. Make sure to use in-text citations consistent with the reference style you have chosen (APA, MLA, etc.).
A Study or Proposed Project and Methods (potential ideas below).
Ethnography
Study a social network and make assertions (communication types, interactions, hierarchy, etc.) about what you have found
Social Network Analysis
Either a new topic or an extension of Assignment #2- This analysis should be more in-depth than Assignment #2 .
Content Analysis
Frequencies of types of communication within social networks,
Diffusion of Innovations
Discuss methods for speading news and encouraging adoption of an innovation– a new app, product, service, drug, social movement, marketing, etc.
Creation of detailed plan of diffusion. You need not diffuse (although you may).
Experimental
Administer some manipulated IV to half of the group.
Discussion
Tie your work together, how does it relate/further the work in the field, discuss possible implications/applications, potential limitations, make conclusions, give ideas for future study, etc.
List of References (9-20 refs)
Your reference list should be consistent (and same format- APA, etc.) as the in-text citations from the rest of the paper.
Presentation Slide(s)
You will very briefly present your findings (or plan) in class. Please attach a printout of your presentation to the paper.
Final Project Deliverables
1.) A paper turned in to me by. The paper should be easily readable and somewhere between 8 and 20 pages. Make sure to proofread for readability, clarity, typos, etc.
An email of your paper in PDF or Microsoft Word format sent to me an hour before class time. The email should be submitted an hour before the paper is due, and cc’d to everyone in your group.
One (or two) Powerpoint slides to explain the study/project. Please attach to the end of your project paper.
