An example. of the writing:
“The first story I looked at was called “Water Carriers” and it was about a Muslim and Christian man bonding while experiencing nature together. I found it interesting how they were able to connect so easily even though they were in separate religions. They had different beliefs on things, but yet were able to listen to each other without telling them that they were wrong. They had a mutual respect for the one another. “We would encourage each other to make sure we said our prayers , read our holy books, and took the time to reflect on the meaning of this experience in the light of our beliefs” (9). Another part of the story I found interesting was the fact that the Christian man said ” i hope we see each other in heaven” (10) when they left. It seemed to come out of nowhere and took me by surprise considering they believe in different things.
The second story i read was the “Hijabi Monologues” which was about a woman named Sahar who shares her stories of what it likes to be a Muslim woman through a play. One of her secular friends came up with the idea after hearing many things she has gone through. The part that interested me the most was the African American man that came to watch her monologue. Afterwards, he told them that he realized that Muslims were normal people. He said he tended to look at others of different religions as people he would be scared of. Because he heard their stories through the play, it changed it his whole perspective on them. A quote I loved from the story was “It is a powerful practice to tell our stories and to hear the stories of others. It helps us see our common humanity, to notice differences in our life journeys, and it invites conversation” (19). This statement has so much truth in it and we as people should learn to listen to what others have to say in order to get know them for who they truly are. ”
