Peer post 1: Childhood trauma and adult illness
Journal of Psychosocial Nursing & Mental Health Services
This article was very short but straight to the point to the information I was looking for. My research is based on the effects of childhood trauma on adults. This study shows how the more childhood abuse a person goes through there is more of a risk of serious disease in adulthood. This study examined 9,500 Kaiser Permanente health plan members to help determine the link between childhood experiences and adult health. This study was conducted through a questionnaire that was based on seven major categories of childhood trauma which were physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, witnessing domestic violence, exposure to mental health illness, substance abuse, or criminal behavior of a household member. According to the research, 6.5% of adults that were exposed to four of the categories were very likely to smoke as adults, more than seven times as likely to become alcoholic, and 12 times more likely to attempt suicide than those who didn’t experience severe trauma during their childhood. Overall the study showed that the risk of smoking, severe obesity, physical inactivity, depressed mood, and suicide attempts increased as the number of childhood trauma exposure increased. The data retrieved from this article was informative, but in my opinion, it still lacked a lot of information. It was missing the ethnicity of the members that the questioner conducted based on as well as the gender and the ages. To add up, I think it would have been better if they provided information regarding mental illness that is linked to childhood trauma.

Relationship Power, Control, and Dating Violence Among Latina Girls
My research is focused on Latina women staying in toxic relationships with boyfriends that are manipulative, violent, controlling, and abusive. The problem is that girls fear leaving the relationship and develop unhealthy coping strategies to save the relationship. In this study, Lopez, Chesney-Lind, and Foley (2021) study 18 Latina girls in relationships and focus on how men develop ways to control, threaten, manipulate, and become aggressive toward girls. A transdisciplinary approach was used to examine how Latina girls think about power and control and it relates to violence in relationships. The study was conducted with 18 participants that were all Latina adolescent girls between the ages of 14 and 18, who lived in residential treatment homes. Each participant completed a semi-structured interview where they answered questions about their relationships with their boyfriends. The results were that 15 of the 18 girls who participated, shared that their boyfriends were controlling and possessive. Controlling over what they wear, what they do, who they talk to, and when to be sexually active. Lopez, Chesney-Lind, and Foley (2021) state that Latin culture views of machismo and marianismo give false gender expectations roles to young adolescents in relationships. “Machismo dictates that Latino boys and men should be tough, sexually assertive, and dominating, whereas Marianismo stresses that girls and women should be submissive and passive in their relationships with boys and men” (Lopez, Chesney-Lind, and Foley, 2021). I found this article to be impactful as machismo and marianismo is still a current trend and problem in Latin relationships. I hope to find research to understand girls mentality thinking it’s okay to be controlled or abused by their boyfriends. I also intend to find resources to share with girls who are seeking a way out of their toxic relationships.
