Purpose of the Annotated Bibliography
For our class, your goal is to create a list of potential sources for use in your two essays. Since the two essays are related in topic, it will be much easier to do all the research at once. The annotation will make it easier for you to decide how and where to use each source.
THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR ESSAYS 2 & 3
This assignment requires research. To make your life a little easier, you will be researching for two essays at the same time since they are related. Here are brief overviews of these two essays. More details for each essay will be on their own assignment pages.
ESSAY 2
Write an essay that details a particular problem. The problem should be something we’ve read about or related to something we’ve read about this semester. Your focus is on arguing that the problem exists and is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. This is not a solutions essay. Given the word count requirement, your essay will need to go into a lot of detail about the problem.
ESSAY 3
Write an essay that details a particular solution to the problem in Essay 2. The solution doesn’t have to be mentioned in our readings this semester. Your focus is on arguing for a solution that will effectively work to reduce or eliminate the problem you have already delineated in essay 2.
RESEARCH
In order to construct an annotated bibliography, you will need to do research.
You can conduct library research via your home computer. The Cypress College library resources can be researched by clicking on the link in the left navigation list. For those who are unfamiliar with the library databases, you can attend a Zoom lesson on this topic.
You can also conduct web research, but you should use an appropriate search engine, such as Sweet Search.com (Links to an external site.). Avoid using google since it doesn’t prioritized the search results in a way that helps you do research effectively.
Annotated Bibliography Requirements
All the sources on this annotated bibliography should be related to one topic that will be your focus for both essays 2 & 3. This document must include the following:
at least six different sources for your particular topic
in MLA format (as you would cite in a Works Cited document)
with approximately 100-150 words of description and analysis per source for a total minimum word count of 650. (The word count requirement specifies the annotation only, not the citation.)
NOTES:
You may find that more research is needed later in the process if you do not take this seriously for your writing assignments. I strongly recommend that you first focus on finding a problem/solution topic that interests you before starting this assignment.
For our class, you do not have to use all the sources from the annotated bibliography in the two essays. If you decide one isn’t really as helpful as you thought, you can leave it out. However, I expect the annotated bibliography to closely match your next two essays’ Works Cited documents. This will allow you to cut /copy from the annotated bibliography to create your Works Cited for the two essays.
