ALTERITY

Connected to the idea of liminality is alterity. Alterity, defined by the OED as “The state of being other or different; diversity, ‘otherness’,” defies a simple definition because it contains concepts like difference and otherness within itself. Difference and otherness must be unpacked to begin understanding alterity and the cluster of meanings associated with otherness. The OED definitions for difference and otherness emphasize the conditions or qualities of separateness, dissimilarity and distinction, especially from an expected norm.[2]

When reading consider how people, places, or things “differ” from the norm or the expected; how characters might be seen as different fundamentally and what makes them that way. This attention to difference and otherness reveals alterity. Alterity is more than being a bit different, it is something we might call “radical difference” (i.e. a “Moor” in medieval England, or an “Indian” in Early Modern North America—the names represent their “otherness”). This level of difference is more than looking different or acting a bit different, there is a sense of complete illegibility: the Other cannot be understood or conceived of within a given society/culture. Look for alterity and how it is manifest and represented in the texts.
