Week 8- Chapter 12 Discussion

I thought this chapter was interesting to learn about the benefits of using technology for documentation. Something that stood out to me was how to utilize audio recording on page 342. According to the textbook, “Recording voices is especially useful to gather speech and language samples” (Nilsen, 2017, p.342). I though this was interesting how audio recorders can be placed in a location where conversations can be recorded and used to analyzed to evaluate play and social development. This was also something I didn’t know before and made me have better knowledge on how to use technology for observation. For example, on page 344 it discusses how a teacher can use video recordings in the classroom as self-evaluation and reflection. I found it interesting how teachers may be unaware of habits in play involvement and language usage (Nilsen, 2017).

My favorite thing about this chapter was on page 345 when it discussed the ethical use of technology documentation. I thought this section was very important to learn about obtaining consent, permission, and maintaining confidentiality. According to the textbook, “Ethical use of video footage is the teachers responsibility” (Nilsen, 2017, p.345). I would say my least favorite part of the chapter was the “It Happened to Me” section on page 352. I think observing conversations like this can help us to correct these biases. There was nothing in the chapter that would change. I felt everything was informative including a refresher of the play stages in dramatic play such as onlooker, solitary, parallel, associative and cooperative.

A new fact I learned from reading this chapter was how to help all children with dramatic play. Children are diverse and come from many different types of families, cultures, and speak different languages. Some factors influence play such as disabilities and socioeconomic differences. This inspires me to use this knowledge to help children in my class with disabilities. I will use the knowledge gained from this chapter to help these children by connecting with families and looking for new ways that children with disabilities can participate and feel accepted in the classroom. I also learned the many types of media that can be used for observing and recording. I will use these skills gained to observe children with photography, audio recording, and video by taking photos for later discussion, capturing expressions, recording milestones and to analyze language and social behavior.
