Write a paper on the character Balin in the poem “Balin and Balan” by Aflred Lord Tennyson. I am attaching two secondary sources that need to be used with the paper. They are long so you dont have to use the entire thing. For the second secondary source you can start on page number 368/ page 12 because that is where the paper needs to pull information from. Please include in text quotations from the sources and the poem itself. The paper needs to be done in MLA format. The paper is discussing how Balin is as a character in the poem. In the poem Balin wants to learn to be a better knight so he models himself after Lancelot. Balin wants to control his anger and be able to gain his kings respect again. In order to do that Balin needs to feel a sense of purpose. A man needs a purpose in life. By having a job to do it gives an individual meaning. Balin needs a reason to distract his anger and mood swings. He looks at Lancelot as one of the greatest knights of all and wants to emulate him. Guinevere also catches the eyes of Balin as a source of inspiration. Because Balin admires these two he holds them to higher standards. Once he realizes that they are capable of betraying the king he loses all faith. This leads him to go on a downward spiral because he loses all sense of purpose. The struggles Balin goes through within himself was striking. The story showed how important having a purpose is in an individuals life.
