Questioning Tourism as Advertised

Questioning Tourism as Advertised

he topic of the essay is “Questioning Tourism as Advertised.” Choose a holiday destination and search for advertisements promoting this destination in various forms of media (e.g., printed ads, websites, and commercials). Critically analyze these advertisements.

The body of your paper should include the following sections*:

Background

Provide some background information that situates tourism within the country’s economy. You may want to address the following questions: How important is tourism for the economy? How long has tourism been present? Is tourism mostly a rural phenomenon or an urban one?

Description of the Advertisements

Describe the tourist advertisements (both texts and photographs/illustrations). Make sure to include points you are going to question in your analysis of the advertisements. You may want to focus on 2 or 3 advertisements.

Analysis of the Advertisements

This is the most important part of your paper. In this section, you are asked to question the advertisements. Think about what the advertisements emphasize – in regards to, for example, the landscape, cultures, and local people at the destination – and what they leave out that you as a tourism student would like to know. The questions you may want to consider for your analysis are: What do the advertisements promote? What is featured in the photographs or illustrations? Who benefits from tourism? In the case of all-inclusive holidays, do local people benefit in any way? Think of other questions you want to address in your analysis. Use the readings to develop your questions. Although you will probably not be able to answer all the questions, asking them demonstrates that you have read and thought about the issues discussed in this course.

* Please note: The sections do not need to correspond with paragraphs, that is, the body of your paper can consist of more than three paragraphs.

Hi, there are some other info that you should be aware of.

OBJECTIVES AND EVALUATIONThis essay is an exercise in critical thinking, in developing a thesis/a main argument, in synthesizing scholarly sources, and in properly acknowledging the ideas, wording, and data of other authors. When evaluating this assignment, we will pay special attention to evidence showing that you used points from a variety of course readings to analyze the advertisements. You should present a well-supported, clear, and coherent discussion.

SOURCES

For your analysis, you are expected to incoporate points (e.g., ideas, issues, concepts, and/or examples) from at least 8 class readings. As class readings count those journal articles and book chapters listed in the document “Course Schedule and Readings” (posted on the OWL course website). Sources that are not listed in the aforementioned document as well as films count in addition to the 8 readings. The chapters in the two books we read in this course count individually; for example: You use chapters 2 and 4 of Native Tours by Erve Chambers, this counts as 2 class readings.

CITATIONS AND REFERENCE LIST

You need to properly acknowledge other authors’ ideas by providing in-text citations and a reference list. Please refrain from citing references in footnotes or endnotes. Use one of the following two citation styles: Chicago style (author-date system) or American Psychological Association (APA) style. You are not allowed to use MLA or any other style.

In your in-text citations, include the author’s name, year of publication of the source, and the page number(s). You need to include page numbers even if you use the APA style of citation.

For example:

– (Chambers 2010, 3) – if you use Chicago;

– (Chambers, 2010, p. 3) – if you use APA.

The reference list should be organized alphabetically by the authors’ last names. In-text citations and reference list should match, meaning all sources cited in the text need to be listed in the reference list and all sources listed in the reference list need to be cited in the text.

If you use Native Tours by Erve Chambers, you can cite the whole book (i.e., you do not need to list the individual chapters). Because Tourism, Power and Culture is an edited volume and the chapters have different authors, you need to list the individual chapters.

A handout with sample citations for the Chicago style (author-date system) and the APA style has been posted on the OWL course website under the “Resources” tool, folder “Assignment.” See also the Western Libraries website for Chicago and APA style guides and citation management tools: http://guides.lib.uwo.ca/c.php?g=324680&p=2201053.

FORMAT• Length: 1,500 to 1,700 words, excluding the reference list; double spaced; 12 point font.

• On the title page or on top of the first page, you should include: the course number and course title; name of the instructor; your name; title of the paper; and the word count.

• Number the pages of your paper.

• Indent a new paragraph.

• Use quotation marks for direct quotes. If a direct quote is four lines and more, indent the entire quotation on both sides, single space it, and do not put quotation marks around it.

Failure to follow the format guidelines, lack of proofreading, and inconsistent citation of references will negatively affect your mark.

OPENING THE PAPER AND THESIS STATEMENTYou may want to start your paper with something that captures the reader’s attention such as: a question; a provocative statement; a quote; a description of a personal experience; a film you have seen etc.

Clearly state your thesis/main argument. You may signify your thesis statement with phrases such as: “This paper argues…”; “In this paper, I argue….”; or “My argument is…” Your thesis should be specific and argumentative. You can place your thesis statement in the middle or at the end of the introduction.

WORD LIMIT AND FIRST PERSON

There will be no mark reductions if your essay exceeds 1,700 words. However, try to keep the length of the essay below 2,100 words (excluding the reference list). Your paper should not be shorter than 1,500 words. You are allowed to use the first person; for example: “I argue…”; “My argument is…”; “In this paper, I will discuss/examine/analyze…” etc

In terms of the class reading, you already helped me more than three times, and you should know some of that. Do you still remember that I post two questions to answer every week and invited you to be my tutor?
