Feeling expression is one of the most difficult facets of counseling—sometimes, our feelings can be most challenging to pinpoint and express. Having a rich vocabulary of feelings is one of the most important tools that you can have in your counseling toolbox.
Be as accurate as you can when identifying feelings. For example, “sad” is quite different than “devastated” or “hopeless”.
For each of the following client statements, utilize the paraphrase, sentence stem, feeling word, check in model of reflecting feelings to create a response. Lastly, write one paragraph about your confidence levels relating to being able to utilize each of the skills that we have learned in the class thus far.
1. CLIENT: I thought that everything would be different during college. I guess I just thought it wouldn’t be like this. I can’t really describe how I think they should have been. Wow I just really don’t know.
2. CLIENT: I’m here because the judge told me I had to come for counseling. I don’t think I have any problem, and I certainly don’t think you can help me. You’re so young. What could you possibly know about helping anyone like me?
3. CLIENT: I just lost my house. I can’t seem to stay in a relationship. Everything is falling apart. Will anything ever work out? Probably not.
4. CLIENT: I am so excited because I just had a date with this wonderful woman. She is everything I have been looking for in a woman. She is beautiful, smart, and kind.
