Your movie assignment is an Expository (type of writing that purposes to explain, inform, or describe), It should not be longer than five (5) pages, written in paragraph form, with an introductory paragraph. I DO NOT want any lists, or lists disguised as paragraphs. This is a written assignment to test your writing skills and to comply with the Communication Component of you Learning Outcomes.
The report has to be double spaced and in a size 12 font with some type of simple easy to read script. Use any one of the six listed movie choices given as a basis:
List any ten (10) key terms from the key terms list provided from the chapters we cover – worth 10 points each. The key terms are provided in each chapter module in Canvas. Give the key term definition from the web page word for word. I WILL NOT try to interpret multiple versions of the definition. You all have the same reading assignments and access to the same online materials. Ensure the key term you use has the exact definition from the reading materials, WORD FOR WORD. Correctly correlate the term to a scene in the movie – if correlation is wrong, the term is wrong. You may use more than that one term per scene. If a scene in the movie illustrates numerous terms, feel free to include them all, as long as you comply with the three requirements above.
Use the header bar to either underline, italicize, or bold the terms and or definitions. Periodically students use a key term in routine usage and does not realize it is a term from the list. By emphasizing the key term and definition in some manner, I know it was not accidental and it is one of the terms.
The movies for the assignment are, in order of preference: 1) Gran Torino, 2) A Time to Kill, 3) Crash, 4) Places in the Heart, 5) Freedom Writers, and 6) Hidden Figures. Please note that movies 1, 2, and 5 are rated “R” for language and violence. Movie 3 is rated “R” for language, violence, and nudity. Movies 4 and 6 are rated PG or PG-13 for mild language and mild violence. You may choose any one of these six movies to watch for your report assignment.The purpose of the report is for you to be able to recognize the key terms in realistic situations. You may or may not specifically hear the term used in the movie, but as you observe the movie and its actions, you should be able to recognize the key terms.
Assignment Don’ts:
1) I have seen these movies many times, I do not need a recap of what happens, nor do I need a dramatic interpretation. Do not use two pages recapping the movie.
2) Do not paraphrase the definition of the term and expect to get credit for it. I emphasized using the webpage definition, so use it, word for word. I have from 100 to 150 Sociology students each semester and I do not want to subjectively decide if your interpretation of the term is correct or not.
3) Do not share papers. I do read these. I do not object to roommates, team members, or friends working together, but the end result must be your own original paper.
