For your final major essay assignment, which will serve as your final exam for this
course, you will craft an argument regarding a current, controversial topic. The essay will be
five pages long, in proper MLA format (see below). It should be limited in scope, and it should
have a clear central idea, with a narrow premise. Even though you will submit an early draft for
peer editing, it should represent the best work you can do without feedback – edit and revise it
several times before presenting it to others.
As an academic argument, the essay should be written only in the third-person point-of-
view and follow an appropriate organizational pattern of your choice, with appropriate transitions
used throughout. This essay should use formal language, although limited figurative language
may be acceptable as a rhetorical technique. Write in complete sentences and do not use slang
terms, except in direct quotations from an expert source. Most importantly, keep it interesting
put some thought into your topic, and be sure to examine your claims and conclusions for logical
gaps and obvious fallacies.
To support your central argument, you will need to provide evidence. While evidence
can certainly include your own independent logical reasoning, you should also incorporate
evidence from at least two outside sources into your paper. All outside sources used will be
listed on a Works Cited page, which will be the sixth (and final page) of your essay. All items
listed in the Works Cited will be in correct MLA 9th edition format, which will be discussed in
class.
Putting a paper in MLA format is easier if you begin your work in the proper format,
rather than just typing it however you want and then trying to make adjustments later. For the
purposes of this assignment, MLA Style means:
12-point, Times New Roman font throughout like this (including the page
numbers)
Double spacing throughout the paper (including the header) to make it easier to
read and edit
In the upper left corner, place the following on successive lines: Your name,
ENC1101, Professor Stewart, and the due date
