WHY SOCIAL MEDIA?
Things have changed a lot since social media specially Facebook because an outbreak for people who wanted change, who wanted to uncover the truth and specially for those who wanted social justice and were never heard.
Before social media most of our thoughts were based on what we will see in the TV or radio. I remember watching on Netflix a series called ¨Narcos¨ and in one of the episodes it shows how big of an influence TV was back then, it showed how people didn’t want a candidate to get elected as the next president, but because it was convenient for the cartels to get him elected, they y went to the TV and radio telling the people that the candidate had already most of the votes, so that make the community stay at their homes and didn’t even bother to vote, for them it was pointless since he had majority of the votes.
The first time many people heard “woke” in its current context was likely during the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, Black citizens took to the streets nightly to protest the police shooting death of Michael Brown. As they did so, they urged each other to “stay woke” against police actions and other threats. (1).The past five years or so, we have seen a huge impact for social media matters, let’s not go too far who doesn’t remember the BLM movements? I think that was a huge movement that started something, something good for our community. The death of George Floyd and African American while in police custody in 2020, has triggered protests around the world and has resurrected the “Black Lives Matter” movement to rename the streets of Washington.
I might not be the best person to talk about the lGBTQ+ community and I do personally do not have anything against, it but if we talk about book bansIO do agree some of the contest shouldn’t be available for kids right away, Im in favor that we teach kinds really young about gender, race, rights, equality but not sexuality itself. Young people need to have access to a variety of books from which they can learn about different perspectives. (2) I strongly believe that sexuality should be a topic that can be teach once you reach a certain age. There are things that influenced a child development specially in the society we are living in because, now everything is so much easier to get and to investigate and just like that to also get influenced.
Lastly, women make up half the world’s population, it has been shown that the empowerment of women stimulates productivity and economic growth, and as a home I feel sad and concerned because, unfortunately, there is still a long way to go to achieve full equality of rights and opportunities between men and women. I think this 21st century has been a little crazy for women, I think instead of seeing more worked done to get equally and it dosent matter how much we fight I have realize that there has been more feminicide.
